TREDAS and GE launch the first integrated Smart Grid Operation System in Turkey
  • Trakya Elektrik Dagıtım A.S. (TREDAS) collaborated with General Electric (GE), the world's leading digital industrial company, to minimize power outages and maximize customer satisfaction.
  • GE has commissioned the 'Operation Center' that delivers an integrated automation system within the scope of an agreement to increase efficiency of TREDAS.
  • The Operation Center is the first ever reference project in Turkey to deliver an all-in-one integrated system that includes Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Control and Monitoring System (SCADA), Distribution Management Systems (DMS) and Outage Management Systems (OMS).

TURKEY - December 5, 2016 - The distribution network operator of Thrace Region, TREDAS, began a collaboration with GE (NYSE: GE), the world's leading digital industrial company, to minimize power outages and maximize customer satisfaction. As a result, GE Energy Connections’ Grid Solutions business, established the Smart Grid Operation Center at TREDAS, to minimize power outages by strengthening technological infrastructure and centralizing operation management. The TREDAS Operation Center, inaugurated in the presence of Berat Albayrak, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, is the first ever reference project in Turkey with an all-in-one integrated system that includes Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Control and Monitoring System (SCADA), Distribution Management Systems (DMS) and Outage Management Systems (OMS).

In addition to the Operation Center, the agreement also includes maintenance and support services for a period of six years as well as the refurbishment of 32 distribution centers.

Canan Özsoy, President & CEO, GE Turkey explained that one of their major goals as the world's leading digital industrial company is to increase their number of model-setting projects in the field of smart grids, setting ground for smart cities across the country: "To this end, we are proud to be paving the way for a shift to an automation system through our collaboration with TREDAS, the electricity distributor for a field of approximately 20,000 square kilometers in our country."

TREDAS CEO Hikmet Sezer emphasized that TREDAS is the only electricity distribution network operator to commission such an Operation Center in Turkey: "Our Operation Center powered by GE systems will allow us to manage the entire distribution system with automation to reduce power failures and increase customer satisfaction. This center will help minimize outage times, which will make it possible to deliver 24/7 uninterrupted service and high-quality energy, while a good number of industrial facilities will be able to achieve more efficiency through seamless electricity services."

Remote control for 732 centers

Remote control and remote powering is achieved for 732 centers through integration of systems in one Operation Center which includes GE-commissioned TREDAS SCADA system, which is also referred to as a Remote Control and Monitoring System, together with a Call Center, Geographical Information System and on-site mobile applications.

Outages are detected in a few minutes

Distribution transformers are monitored remotely. This way, an outage is detected instantly and the workforce management system automatically creates a work order within a maximum 5 minutes. The monitoring system creates instant alerts once any outage occurs, except for minor outages affecting small numbers of consumers, and quick response is achieved.

GE Turkey offers the following strategic objectives in TREDAS Operation Center:

  • Minimizing the outage times for consumers.
  • Reducing both technical and non-technical losses through implementation of advanced optimization and analysis techniques.
  • Meeting consumer demand through provision of energy, and handling the distribution of electricity to exercise control for contractual liabilities regarding power supply and wholesale electricity commitment to consumers.
  • Increase of supply continuity by automatic restoration of electrical grid in case of outage. Improving safety during the maintenance of grid plants and assets
  • Informing the authorized personnel about the details of grid status upon request via electronic means.
  • Enhancing workforce productivity and quality through teamwork, information integrity and a standardized data processing application.
