GE Addresses Growing Energy Needs
  • Growth: $25M worth of key contracts signed in North America
  • Innovation: Two Gas Insulated Substation contracts for GE’s Green Gas for Grid (g3)

PARIS – August 22, 2016 – GE (NYSE: GE) today announced several contracts that address growing energy demand and provide utilities with its environmentally friendly solution, Green Gas for Grid (g3).

GE’s Grid Solutions business continues to meet growing energy demand in North America with three new contracts valued at approximately $25M for Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) technology:

  • Replacing aging infrastructure with a turnkey fixed series compensation substation for Idaho Power in order to maintain system efficiency.
  • Including reinforcing the grid for VELCO with GE Static Var Compensation (SVC) equipment. With the installation of this turnkey SVC solution, VELCO will own GE’s complete FACTS portfolio for dynamic shunt compensation.
  • Grid modernization contract with Hydro Quebec to upgrade the protection and controls for 3 capacitor fixed series banks at Montagnais, a 735kV electric substation located in the northern region of Quebec.

Grid Solutions has also completed the delivery of the 10th fixed series capacitors bank to Electric Transmission Texas (ETT). Designed to increase power flow, these banks were installed to relieve congestion and provide the ability to increase the available power needed in the region.

In addition, GE continues to forge ahead with its revolutionary g3, the SF6 alternative for high-voltage equipment, signing two separate contracts:

  • Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN) in the UK has awarded GE with a contract to supply a Gas Insulated Line (GIL) using the g3 solution. The GIL will be installed in the Kilmarnock South Substation, located in the South West of Scotland. This new equipment will save 1.7 tons of SF6, a global warming potential corresponding to approximately 40,000 tons of CO2. It is the second pilot project of this nature in the country after the National Grid project in Sellindge, which is about to be delivered and commissioned, ready for energizing.
  • In Switzerland, GE will provide Axpo with a F35-145kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS). Here, instead of SF6, g3 will be used in all components including circuit breakers. Located close to Zurich, this substation will be the first in world using g3, in line with Axpo’s aim to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions.
