GE awarded a services contract by Edesur for its grid modernization project in Argentina
GE awarded a services contract by Edesur for its grid modernization project in Argentina

GE’s Grid Solutions was awarded a services contract by Edesur S.A. (Empresa Distribuidora Sur S.A.), part of Enel Argentina, to provide preventive maintenance and strategic spare parts for three key substations. Together, these substations supply power to over 500,000 homes and industries in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“The electrical industry must change quickly to be sustainable in the long run. Energy transition is fundamental to tackle climate change, and the grid is the infrastructure that enables this transition, connecting renewable energy generation to the consumers. This is how the distribution grid plays an integral role towards a more sustainable world,” said Gianluca Palumbo, Edesur General Manager. “This great project we’re carrying out with GE, one of our stakeholders, is necessary in terms of investing in renewables, modernization, digitalization as well as the redesign of future distribution grids. The aim is that these grids will be more resilient, helping to ensure higher service quality for customers.”

The overall modernization project includes the execution of major maintenance on all GIS equipment manufactured by GE in the 80’s and 90’s operating at 220 kV and 132 kV, and the supply of strategic spare parts for Edesur stock. Following the inspection of the main components of gas-insulated switchgear, GE’s local Grid Services team will execute applicable repairs.

To deliver this extensive modernization of gas-insulated substations, GE brings its field and product expertise as the original manufacturer. Moreover, by mobilizing the technical competencies required to build a dedicated team, this will help customers extend the life of Argentina’s grid network, as part of Edesur’s energy transition strategy.

"Supporting distribution operators such as Edesur to ensure a reliable and sustainable power supply to local communities and industries is our daily focus and commitment,” said Maria Fernanda Locarnini, Senior Sales Leader of GE’s Grid Solutions in Southern Cone of Latin America. “Decades ago, we partnered with Edesur to build these three gas-insulated substations. Today, GE is providing a customized modernization program to help extend the life of these substations.”
