Green Gas for Grid Sees Growing Global Adoption

As international conversations continue around global regulations to limit greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and potential carbon tax initiatives, GE is proud of its work in the transmission and distribution (T&D) sector, where its collaboration with 3M enabled the development of Green Gas for Grid (g3 or g-cubed), an economical and environmental alternative insulating gas to sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). SF6 has a global warming potential (GWP) up to 23,500 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2) and can remain in the atmosphere for 3,200 years.

In the special DistribuTECH issue of POWERGRID International, we discuss the evolution of the T&D sector relative to its GHG emissions, how our partnership with 3M yielded a safe, reliable alternative to SF6 that is currently being tested and adopted in transmission systems around the world, and why this revolutionary development has global significance for utilities everywhere.
