P54 MiCOM 5th Generation
Line Differential and Distance Protection

The P54, part of the MiCOM P40 Agile 5th Generation family, is a line differential and distance Protection that delivers high performance processing and a graphical HMI as standard. A cost-effective range of transmission/sub-transmission class protection relays providing comprehensive line differential protection for up-to 3 line ends, with in-built subcycle transmission class distance and directional earth fault protection. This range of products is ideal for HV, EHV and UHV applications on lines and cables for 1 or 2 breaker applications with patented adaptive auto-reclose functionality.

Key features:

  • Integrated full colour display, for single-line diagram control of the protected bay.
  • Current transformer supervision operates with or without voltage inputs, to prevent any spurious tripping and raise the alarm
  • True subcycle distance protection with up to 9 fully directional distance zones for transmission class security and dependability
  • Load blinder prevents spurious trips cascading through the network in extreme conditions such as on the verge of a blackout
  • Distance phase preference tripping logic and transient earth fault detection (TEFD) for Petersen coil earthed and isolated systems
  • Unparalleled speed, security and selectivity
  • With fast start up time of less than 10s, resulting in protection, control and communications without the need to wait
  • Full compatibility of the Line Differential communications with all legacy MiCOM P540
  • Compatible with 56/64kbps or 2Mbps for direct fiber or MUX communications channels
  • Suitable for use with equal or unequal transmit and receive path delays (eg SDH/SONET)
  • Suitable for MPLS differential channels
  • Full suite of monitoring, control and recording capabilities plus fault locator.
  • Multi-shot autoreclosure with check synchronism - adaptive technology to detect fault arc extinction and accelerate the dead time or drive to lockout for persistent faults
  • Harsh environment coating as standard for all GE’s MiCOM P40 relays protects against corrosive gases such as H2S or SO2
  • No internal batteries in GE-branded models – removes a maintenance item and eases air-freight logistics
  • CyberSentryTM  Advanced Security including AAA, Radius, RBAC, and Syslog
  • IEC 61850 9-2LE Process Bus capability with PRP in all models
  • Secure Data vault with 5000 events, 100 Fault records and over 1000s of Oscillography
  • Binary inputs ESI48-4 EB2 compliant

Overview

The P54 MiCOM 5th Generation range of transmission-class protection relays provide high speed current differential unit protection. They are designed for overhead line and cable applications, interfacing readily with the longitudinal (end-end) communications channel between line terminals. The interface options support direct fiber optic or multiplexed digital links.
Each of the models offer resident subcycle distance protection to complement the powerful suite of main and backup protection. Full scheme, nine-zone distance protection is adopted from the class-leading MiCOMho P44. The product line becomes the standard in all HV, EHV and UHV line protection applications, duplicated where dual redundant main protection is demanded. Set any combination of differential, distance, overcurrent and reclosing, depending on the site needs. One universal relay type instead of two or more discrete models means reduced spares holding, less training, and lower cost.
The MiCOM Agile P54 is also suitable for the complex installation and feeders controlled by two circuit breakers such as breaker-and-a-half configurations with dual breaker autoreclose logic schemes with synchrocheck for both breakers.

Key benefits:

  • A universal relay that reduces spare holding - apply as a current differential relay, a distance relay, or both
  • Neutral differential boosts sensitivity of tripping for resistive earth faults, even for lines with heavy load-flow
  • Transient biasing reduces CT knee point dimensioning by typically 25% compared to historical applications
  • Differential protection adaptable to all different substation topologies: in-zone transformers and unequal line end CT ratios
  • Multi-shot 1/3pole & 3pole autoreclosure with check synchronism - adaptive technology to detect fault arc extinction and accelerate the dead time or drive to lockout for persistent faults.  Improves system stability whilst reducing OPEX.

Main characteristics:

  • Comprehensive communication options including IEC 61850 Edition 2
  • IEC 61850 redundant Ethernet protocols - RSTP, PRP or HSR
  • IEC 61850 9-2LE redundant PRP Process bus protocol
  • Fast subcycle distance protection with quadrilateral or mho zones and setting free power swing detection
  • InterMiCOM64 for transmitting digital signals (24/32) through teleprotection communication links
  • CyberSentryTM Advanced Security including AAA, Radius, RBAC, and Syslog
