Deploying a Sustainable Alternative for SF₆ High Voltage Gas-Insulated Substations

For decades, utilities have been searching for an alternative to SF₆ because of its considerable impact on global warming. Now in operation for over a year, the first SF₆-free 420kV gas-insulated line for National Grid using g³ – replacing SF₆ – is operating under all conditions fully satisfactory, with no distinction in its performance to  SF₆ equipment.  Transmission System Operators now have a viable, environmentally-responsible choice.

With the Sellindge substation, National Grid is the first of several utilities that plan to implement GE’s g³ solution in their network. For them, it’s just the beginning of their journey to remove SF₆ from equipment across their network.
