Deploying a Sustainable Alternative for SF6 High Voltage Gas-Insulated Substations

For decades, utilities have been searching for an alternative to SF6 because of its considerable impact on global warming. Now in operation for over a year, the first SF6-free 420kV gas-insulated line for National Grid using g3 – replacing SF6 – is operating under all conditions fully satisfactory, with no distinction in its performance to  SF6 equipment.  Transmission System Operators now have a viable, environmentally-responsible choice.

With the Sellindge substation, National Grid is the first of several utilities that plan to implement GE’s g3 solution in their network. For them, it’s just the beginning of their journey to remove SF6 from equipment across their network.

Mark Waldron shares National Grid’s story in our exclusive interview. Click for more insight on how your utility can employ g3 technology to drastically reduce SF6 emissions, without impacting operational performance or safety.
