Grid Solutions is pleased to have four of its products qualified in GE’s Ecomagination portfolio.

Green Transformer

  • A transformer is a device that transfers energy from one electrical circuit to another by magnetic coupling without requiring relative motion between its parts. Transformers’ parts and components can be divided into two main groups: Active Part and Passive Part. The active part comprises the magnetic circuit, the windings, and their clamping structures. The passive part is needed to make the transformer functional, e.g. cooling equipment, protective equipment, and other fittings.

    Power transformers are generally filled with mineral oil which is based on petroleum products and not really biodegradable. Green transformers are filled with a natural ester (vegetable oil) which presents a high biodegradation rate, is directly obtained from seeds (then naturally produced) and comes from renewable sources. In addition to have a biodegradable liquid, additional aspects are considered in the green transformer like lower audible noise, reducing losses and increasing efficiency, reliability and reducing maintenance.

    GE’s green power transformer (10 to 500MVA and up to 550kV) is a sustainable, eco-efficient product with the following functionalities:

    • Filled with natural ester instead of mineral oil
    • Hermetically sealed tank design, equipped with patented expandable radiators and OLTC with vacuum type changer
    • Innovative technologies to reduce acoustic energy transferred and optimized design of the active part
    • Optimized low loss levels
    • Solvent free paint

  • Gas-Insulated Substations (GIS) protect equipment, transmission lines and power transformers, and isolates the line connected to the power transformer. GE provides a full range of GIS solutions for utilities and industries worldwide, from 60 to 800 kV, along with secondary products to maximize switchgear and network operation.

    GE's GIS portfolio includes solutions that feature some of the most compact footprints in the market, along with easily accessible, small and light weight components. In addition, many of the solutions are environmentally friendly and include low gas weights and an advanced SF6 sealing system. Full digital monitoring control and protection capabilities enable smart grid integration.

    Eco-design is the integration of environmental criteria into the process of designing or re-designing a product. Eco-design seeks to minimize the environmental impact of a given product at every stage of its lifecycle and improve its environmental performance, all while maintaining or improving its reliability and cost efficiency. GIS product line has one full time employee dedicated to eco-designed. Since 2010, all new products are designed.

    • F35 72,5 kV : total mass reduced by 30%, recyclability improved to 91%
    • F35 145 kV: total mass reduced by 17%, electrical losses reduced by 22%, recyclability improved to 87%
    • F35 170 kV: total mass reduced by 35%, SF6 mass reduced by 22%, recyclability improved to 91%
    • B105 252 kV: aluminum reduced by 12%, SF6 quantity reduced by 11%, recyclability improved to 95%, wood for packaging reduced by 65%

g³ Products

  • To support utilities’ process of transforming their infrastructure to one characterized by equipment less environmentally harmful, GE has developed a breakthrough technology that replaces SF6 for HV applications: g³ – green gas for grid.

    The g³ gas mixture is based on 3M Novec 4710 molecule from the fluoronitrile family, with a carefully balanced percentage of Carbon Dioxide (CO²). It offers a unique combination of low global warming potential (GWP) with dielectric properties and minimum operating temperatures in accordance with the typical TSO's needs.

    Lifecycle Assessment demonstrates that there is a 98% reduction in CO² emissions compared to traditional products. The Lifecycle Asssessment tool used to make this assessment was Simapro. Customers adopting g³ technology are getting ahead of forthcoming regulations as there is a push towards banning Sulphur Hexafluoride as an insulator in high voltage substations.

Digital Substation

  • GE's Intelligent Digital Substations improve maintenance scheduling, optimize asset utilization, prevent failures and increase the reliability of electrical grids by reducing power outage probability and duration. New intelligent energy management tools from Current, powered by GE, help managers of commercial and industrial facilities use energy more efficiently.

    Digital substations increase efficiency by optimizing transformer capacity through the Smart Cooling System. It also has several operational benefits including:

    • Maximizing the reliability of your substation
    • Operating assets more efficiently and safely close to the limits of the system
    • Optimizing maintenance, repair and retrofit of equipment with minimal outages
    • Improving maintenance efficiency by local and remote access Condition Monitoring
    • Reducing cost of wiring, replacing cooper wires by Fiber Optic networking
    • Reducing Building and secondary P&C Panels footprint
    • Unlocking additional power and/or integration of renewables
    • Reducing unplanned/planned down time of the substation by increased reliability/ availability

    Digital substations are based on the IEC 61850 unifying communication standard for complete information sharing and interoperability, allowing future modernization and the integration of new systems. Digital Control Systems (DCS) are connected with the primary bays via a process bus built on redundant Ethernet architectures. Merging and control units collect and translate measurements, signals and commands (I/O) from the primary equipment into sampled values and GOOSE messages and vice-versa. Digital instrument transformers and DCS-integrated condition monitor for the substation's primary equipment can be added, providing superior safety, reliability and substation situational awareness, locally and remotely.

    With the added flexibility provided by digital substations, new optimization functions can be added to unlock efficiency and additional power on primary devices. Also intersubstation wide area controls add resilience and reliability in the operation of the grid.
